Matthias Brodbeck
Matthias is a second-year Applied Mathematics student at the University of Groningen.
Hello everyone! Over the past few weeks, I had the privilege to intern at Volv Global, where I worked with the Data Science team on a machine learning project for organizing coded healthcare information into a clinically meaningful structure.
While I came into the internship having worked with Python, concepts such as semantic embeddings, clustering, dimensionality reduction and much of the data science, machine learning, and computational problem-solving workflow were entirely new to me. It was therefore incredibly rewarding to see how mathematical and computational ideas could be applied to a real-world healthcare company. The internship gave me valuable experience in taking an open-ended problem, developing an approach, experimenting with different methods, and refining the solution based on the results.
What stood out most to me, however, was the team. I was given the independence to explore and develop my own approach, while always knowing that whenever I was stuck or had a question, someone would take the time to help and explain things until I understood.
Volv Global’s work focuses on using AI and machine learning to uncover meaningful patterns in complex healthcare data, helping improve the understanding of diseases and ultimately supporting better outcomes for patients. Being able to contribute, to work connected to that mission, made this experience particularly meaningful.
This internship has definitely made me interested in exploring data science further as I continue my Applied Mathematics degree, while also reminding me of how many different fields the subject can lead to. For any student considering an internship at Volv Global, I would absolutely recommend it. You will be given the opportunity to work independently, learn new things, and, most importantly, be surrounded by people who are genuinely willing to help you grow.

Louna Faour
Louna is a Lebanese student going into Physics after completing one year of Computer Science.
I came into the internship with some programming experience and an interest in problem solving, but this was my first opportunity to see how those skills are used in a real professional environment.
My experience at Volv Global
One of the best parts of the internship was the team. Everyone was always willing to take the time to explain things to me, from core concepts like how to properly structure my code to helping me work through my task whenever I got stuck. I really appreciated having a team that was so approachable and willing to help me learn throughout the internship.
I really enjoyed how much independence I was given throughout the project. Rather than working towards a predefined solution, I was encouraged to explore the problem, consider different approaches, and bring my own ideas to the team. It made the experience much more engaging, because I was able to contribute to the direction of the work while learning from the team’s feedback and experience.
My project
My project involved working with medical coding data. Through this project, I learned how valuable the way data is structured can be. Organizing complex medical information can make it easier to analyse and extract meaningful informatin from. It was interesting to see how such a technical task could connect to a bigger purpose of Volv Global’s work.
What I’m taking away from the experience
One of the biggest things I will take away from the internship is being more comfortable with not knowing the answer immediately. Real problems don’t always come with clear instructions or one correct solution. You have to explore, ask questions, test ideas, learn from what doesn’t work and keep improving your approach.
I also now have a much better understanding of what working in a technical team actually looks like day to day. Going forward, I want to continue developing both my technical and problem-solving skills and explore where the combination of my background in Physics and computing can take me.
For a student considering an internship at Volv Global, my advice would be: don’t be afraid to ask questions and don’t be afraid to propose your own ideas.
